Watch our interview with Michael Collins TD on the Victory for Free Speech: Discussing Defeating the Government’s Censorship Bill

03.10.2024

Following the announcement of the landmark victory in the battle to protect free speech in Ireland. The controversial 'Hate Speech' Bill, which posed a serious threat to open debate and the expression of personal beliefs, has been officially scrapped.

Independent Ireland leader, Michael Collins TD, joined Family & Life for a conversation about this successful campaign. In the recent interview, Deputy Collins shared his insights into the efforts to defeat the pro-censorship legislation and the key role that public outcry played in its downfall.

The bill, which contained vague and subjective definitions, could, if legislated for, have potentially resulted in legal repercussions for individuals simply expressing their views on vital topics such as abortion, family values, and other sensitive societal issues. Mr. Collins explained how, if passed, the legislation would have stifled freedom of speech and hindered the ability of people to engage in meaningful discussions on important matters.

Family & Life's were very active in the campaign and wish to thank all involved who were crucial to this victory. Through a national petition, widespread leafleting, and efforts to raise awareness through meetings, we made it clear that the will of the people must be heard. Politicians in government did eventually reconsider their stance, resulting in the bill's defeat.

Though this is a significant win, the fight to defend free speech is far from over. Michael Collins TD discusses what lies ahead in this ongoing battle and how we can maintain the momentum in protecting our rights to speak freely.
