Victory for Free Speech: Government Finally Bins Hate Speech Legislation
23.09.2024
After much public outcry and determined lobbying, the government has finally scrapped its controversial "Hate Speech" bill. This legislation, which posed a significant threat to freedom of speech, has been shelved. Family & Life put a lot of work into this campaign and we want to thank our supporters for helping our lobbying campaign against this pro censorship bill.
We have long warned of the dangers hidden within this bill. As outlined in our leaflets and at public meetings, the legislation’s vague language around “hate” and “protected characteristics” left it open to dangerous abuse. In a chilling twist, individuals could face legal repercussions simply for expressing their beliefs. What was proposed as a measure against hate crimes would have, in reality, censored ordinary citizens, stifled political debate, and silenced dissenting voices on issues like abortion and family values, along with a variety of other issues.
Our petition garnered 10s of 1000s thousands of signatures, sending a clear message to the government that free speech is non-negotiable. Family & Life’s leaflet campaign, explaining the Orwellian risks of this bill, reached countless homes across the country, educating the public and rallying them to action. Together, we voiced our concerns and made it impossible for politicians to ignore the overwhelming demand for this bill to be binned.
Special thanks go to Aontú, the only party in the Dáil that consistently opposed this draconian legislation. Many independent TDs also stood strong, defending free speech when it mattered most. As we move towards the next election, it’s crucial to remember who stood up for your freedoms.
While this is a tremendous victory, we must remain vigilant. The fight for free speech isn’t over. A general election is on the horizon and it is important we remember the pro life and pro free speech TDs who were on our side. Family & Life will continue holding the government accountable, ensuring our rights are protected. Let's keep up the momentum and defend our values in the face of future challenges.
