US Billionaire Funding Pro-Abortion Campaign in Ireland
31.08.2016
A leaked document has revealed lavish grants from US billionaire George Soros to three Irish pro-abortion groups as part of a concerted campaign to repeal the 8th Amendment.
The strategy document from the Open Society Foundation details how Soros planned to fund Amnesty Ireland, the Abortion Rights Campaign and the Irish Family Planning Association as part of a plan to force the repeal of the Eighth Amendment. The document explicitly identified this as a likely means of loosening legal restrictions on abortion in other Catholic countries in Europe.
In the leaked document, detailing the 2016-2019 strategy for Soros’s “Women’s Rights Program”, the foundation said it would fund the three Irish organisations “to work collectively on a campaign to repeal Ireland's constitutional amendment granting equal rights to an implanted embryo as the pregnant woman”.
“With one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the world, a win there could impact other strongly Catholic countries in Europe, such as Poland, and provide much needed proof that change is possible, even in highly conservative places.” It is clear that Soros wishes to pre-empt attempts in other countries “to enshrine life from conception” in their constitutions, and sees attacking the 8th Amendment in Ireland as helpful to this effort.
The document cited last year’s same-sex marriage referendum as offering “valuable and timely opportunities to advance the campaign.”
It is believed that, so far, the three pro-abortion groups have received in the region of $150,000 each to participate in the Soros campaign against Ireland’s constitution. The document expresses the intention that by 2019 it will have developed “a robust set of organisations advancing and defending sexual and reproductive rights”.
