Stormont Abortion Bill Resubmitted
24.03.2017
Even though the recent election in Northern Ireland has yet to produce a new Executive, and the Assembly is not in session, MLA David Ford’s first action after his re-election was to resubmit his private member’s bill to liberalise Northern Ireland’s abortion law.
Mr Ford presented his proposal to the Speaker’s Office shortly after he signed the roll of membership to officially become an MLA again. The bill had been moved in the previous Assembly but had not progressed by the time the Executive collapsed.
The proposed legislation would allow abortion in cases of so-called “fatal foetal abnormalities”. Mr Ford previously attempted to change the abortion law when he was Justice Minister.
