Renewed Hope: 32 Pro-Life TDs Elected to the Dáil
13.12.2024
The 2024 General Election has delivered a significant boost to the pro-life movement in Ireland, with 32 pro-life TDs elected—a marked increase from 2020. This success reflects a growing wave of support for pro-life values, offering renewed hope for advocacy that protects the unborn and promotes life-affirming policies.
Aontú, celebrated a remarkable achievement, doubling their national vote and further establishing themselves as a vital voice for life in Irish politics. Notable victories included the election of Paul Lawless (Aontú) in Mayo and Ken O'Flynn (Independent Ireland) in Cork North Central. Veteran pro-life advocates like Mattie McGrath and Carol Nolan also excelled, topping the polls in their constituencies.
All 15 pro-life TDs who voted No in the 2018 abortion referendum were re-elected, reinforcing a strong pro-life presence in the Dáil. These include Mary Butler, Michael Healy-Rae, Michael Fitzmaurice and Peadar Tóibín. Richard O'Donoghue, another pro life supporter, also retained his seat, adding to the momentum.
Even candidates who narrowly missed election, such as Aontú’s Ellen O’Reilly and Sarah O’Reilly, demonstrated impressive performances, positioning themselves as strong contenders for the future. Meanwhile, the loss of pro-abortion advocates like Stephen Donnelly and Gino Kenny highlights shifting dynamics in the political landscape.
This election marks an important step forward for the pro-life movement, laying the groundwork for greater efforts to address Ireland’s abortion rate and support women in crisis. Thank you to every candidate and supporter who stood for life—this is a renewed beginning with much promise ahead.
