Marie Stopes Poised for Irish Expansion?
09.02.2018
A British abortion business has denied news reports it is considering expanding its operations in Ireland if the 8th Amendment is repealed. The Marie Stopes organisation, Britain’s second largest abortion provider, said they are watching the referendum with interest, but currently have no plans to open a clinic here. The group already targets Irish women for its abortion clinics in Britain.
It is understood that the Stopes company is waiting to see how the referendum goes and what abortion legislation passes through the Oireachtas. A source told The Irish Sun: “This is on our radar but we wouldn’t look at providing services in Ireland until after we know the law is changing. There are no plans to provide services in the Republic yet, but we are watching the referendum closely.”
Marie Stopes, which closed its Belfast centre last December, currently runs 70 abortion clinics across England.
