Euthanasia Bill
28.01.2021
*Urgent* This is a reminder that the deadline for sending written submissions on the Euthanasia bill, entitled the "Dying with Dignity Bill" to the Committee on Justice is this Friday 29th January at noon. Please don't forget to include your name, number and email to send to dyingwithdignity@oireachtas.ie.
Effectively this bill could be legislated to allow people to be killed not just for their terminal illness but depression as well. They just have to be diagnosed as terminally ill by 2 doctors acccording to the bill to avail of assisted suicide.
This legislation was voted into a hearing of the seanad. It was voted for by the leader of Fine Gael, Leo Varadkar, Minister of Health, Stephen Donnelly and the Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee despite no provisions being made for psychiatric evaluations or a psychiatrist involvement at all.
There is huge opposition in the medical profession both internationally and in Ireland. The World Medical Association who are part of the WHO have opposed it. In Ireland The Royal College of Physicians have strongly opposed it. Palliative carers are overwhelmingly against it, the very ones who would be expected to perform assisted suicide on the patients.
