Scottish National Party Delegates Vote for Constitutional Right to Abortion Up to Birth
17.09.2024
Delegates at the Scottish National Party's 90th Annual National Conference voted in favor of a resolution to include the "right to abortion" in a future constitution of an independent Scotland. This resolution, introduced by the Elgin Branch, emphasises that access to abortion should be protected from political and judicial fluctuations, treating legal abortion as a fundamental aspect of healthcare and bodily autonomy. The proposal passed after a debate where two speakers supported and two opposed the motion.
If enacted, abortion would be available on demand, up to birth, leaving Scotland with one of the most permissive abortion laws globally. One speaker, Laura Mitchell, argued that enshrining this right in a constitution would ensure protection from political changes, while Peter Grant warned that it might alienate voters who otherwise support independence.
This resolution, now approved as SNP policy, may be championed in future government actions or at Westminster, reflecting the party’s ongoing push for radical liberal changes in Scottish society.
