04.04.2019

The number of abortions carried out in Portugal at the woman’s request fell 25 per cent between 2011 and 2017.

According to a report released by national health authorities, the number of abortions increased up until 2011 before steadily declining since.

In 2017, there were just under 15,000 abortions, the lowest figure since the practice became legal in Portugal in 2007.

The average age of women at the time of the abortion remains 28 and there has been a decrease in all age groups, except women aged 40 and older.
