Serbia Moving to Legalise Euthanasia

07.06.2019

A new draft Civil Code in Serbia contains a proposal for the legalisation of euthanasia.

After two years of discussion by a government committee on the drafting of the code, the latest version of the preliminary draft contains a provision on the possibility of ending the lives of people suffering from severe and incurable diseases by assisted suicide or euthanasia.

The decision will be taken by the person to be killed or with the consent of their relatives.

According to Politics newspaper, a special law has been announced, which will precisely define the conditions and procedures for exercising the new “right” to euthanasia. Changes to Serbia’s Penal Code will also be necessary.
